When is an abdominoplasty useful?
- For excess skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss
- For abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti) after pregnancy
- When isolated diet and exercise no longer flatten the lower abdomen
- For visible stretch marks below the umbilicus (which are removed with the skin)
- To restore a defined waist and abdominal contour
- For patients within 5–10 kg of their target weight, in stable weight condition
Abdominoplasty in Mexico
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty — commonly called a tummy tuck — is a comprehensive body-contouring procedure that addresses three components in a single operation: excess skin and fat, abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti) and contour irregularities of the flanks.
The modern approach — lipoabdominoplasty (Saldanha technique) — combines selective liposuction with skin excision and muscle repair, preserving the perforator vessels for safer healing and a more refined contour. Surgery lasts 3 to 5 hours under general anesthesia.
Who is a good candidate?
Adults with excess abdominal skin and/or muscle separation, in good general health, at a stable target weight, non-smokers (or able to stop 4 weeks before and after surgery), at a stable weight close to their target. Women who have completed their family or men/women who have lost significant weight are typical candidates. Active smokers, severely overweight patients or those with poorly controlled diabetes are not candidates due to elevated complication risk.
Expected results
The abdomen is flat. The waist is defined. The umbilicus is repositioned naturally. Stretch marks below the umbilicus are removed with the excised skin. Result is essentially final at 6 months. Permanent with stable weight; future pregnancy is possible but will affect the result.
The Three Components
A modern abdominoplasty addresses three structural problems — addressing only one yields a partial result.
1. Excess skin and fat
The redundant lower abdominal skin (often with stretch marks) is excised between the umbilicus and the pubic area. Selective liposuction refines the upper abdomen and flanks.
2. Diastasis recti
The two halves of the rectus muscle, often separated after pregnancy, are reapproximated in the midline with permanent sutures (myorrhaphy). This restores the abdominal wall function and the natural waist.
3. Umbilical repositioning
The original umbilicus is preserved (it is on a vascular stalk) and re-attached through a new opening in the elevated skin, in its anatomically correct position.
Incisions & Scars
The main scar is a long, low transverse incision designed to be hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom. Our surgeons use tension-free layered closure with fine absorbable sutures — never staples — so the wound seals from the inside out and the final scar is as thin and discreet as possible.
Lower transverse scar
From hip to hip, low enough to be hidden by underwear. Length depends on the amount of skin removed.
Umbilical scar
A small ring around the new umbilical opening. Hidden inside the natural belly button shape.
Sutures, not staples
We close every layer with absorbable buried sutures rather than skin staples. There is nothing to remove later, no staple track-marks on the skin, and the resulting scar is noticeably finer.
Scars take 12–18 months to fully mature. It is advised to use silicone sheeting and follow a scar-care protocol for optimal long-term result.
Abdominoplasty Techniques
Mini Abdominoplasty
For patients with isolated lower-abdomen laxity (no upper-abdomen excess, no diastasis above the umbilicus). Shorter scar, no umbilical repositioning, faster recovery. Suitable for a select minority of candidates.
Tummy Tuck with Liposuction
The reference operation at Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico. Full skin excision from pubis to umbilicus, diastasis repair from xiphoid to pubis, selective liposuction of upper abdomen and flanks. Hip-to-hip scar.
Extended / Fleur-de-Lys
For patients with very significant skin excess (typically after massive weight loss) where horizontal excision alone is insufficient. Adds a vertical scar in the midline. Reserved for specific indications.
Abdominoplasty + 360 Lipo
Standard abdominoplasty combined with 360-degree liposuction (Abdomen, Abdominal flanks, Lower back, Upper back). The most comprehensive trunk contouring procedure. Recovery slightly longer.
Abdominoplasty in Mexico — Step by Step
Your Consultation
Free online or in-person consultation. We assess skin laxity, fat distribution, diastasis recti (palpation + ultrasound when needed), abdominal hernias, weight history, and patient goals. Standardised photographs. Personalised plan with realistic timeline and pricing.
Before the Surgery
Pre-operative blood work, medical clearance, abdominal imaging when indicated. Stop smoking 4 weeks before (mandatory). Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories for 10 days. Stable weight for at least 6 months. Arrive in Mexico City 1–2 days before surgery.
The Day of Surgery
You arrive fasting at the accredited private hospital. Surgery lasts 3 to 5 hours under general anesthesia. Drains are placed before closure. You spend 1–2 nights in the hospital.
After the Surgery
Daily M.D. home visits at the hotel for the first 7 days. Drains removed at days 5–7. Compression garment 24/7 for 6 weeks. Return to desk work at 14–21 days. Final remote follow-up at 6 months.
Recovery After Abdominoplasty
First 7 days
Moderate discomfort, well controlled with prescribed medication. Bent-forward posture for the first 3 to 5 days to protect the closure. Drains in place. Compression garment 24/7. Daily M.D. home visits. Walk every 2 hours to prevent blood clots.
Weeks 2 to 4
Drains removed at days 5–7. Posture progressively straightens. Most bruising resolves. Return to desk work at 14–21 days. Light walking encouraged. No lifting more than 5 kg.
Weeks 4 to 12
Compression garment continues to 6 weeks. Light cardio at 4 weeks, full exercise (including core work) at 8–12 weeks. Scar matures from red to pink. Final result approximately 80% by week 12.
Long-term care
Final result visible at 6 months. Result is permanent with stable weight. Future pregnancy is possible but will affect the result — we recommend completing family before surgery when possible.
Risks and Complications
General Surgical Risks
Infection, hematoma, suboptimal scarring, asymmetry, sensory changes around the incision (typically temporary). All are uncommon and well managed in our practice.
Seroma
The most common specific complication after abdominoplasty — a fluid collection beneath the skin. Drains placed at surgery prevent most cases. Late seromas (3–5%) are managed with simple in-office aspiration.
DVT & Pulmonary Embolism
The most serious risk of abdominoplasty. Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico applies a strict prevention protocol: intermittent pneumatic compression during surgery, early ambulation, low-molecular-weight heparin when indicated, and screening of risk factors (Caprini score) before scheduling surgery.
How Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico Minimises Risks
Board-certified surgeons, accredited private hospitals, strict candidate selection (smoking status, weight stability, comorbidities), perioperative DVT prophylaxis, daily medical follow-up, drain protocol, compression garment compliance. Complication rate well below international averages.
Diastasis Recti & Abdominal Wall Repair
What is Diastasis Recti?
The two halves of the rectus abdominis muscle are joined in the midline by a fibrous band (linea alba). With pregnancy or significant weight gain, this band stretches and the two muscle bellies separate. The result is a visible vertical bulge when the patient flexes — 'mommy belly' — that does not respond to exercise alone because the muscles themselves are no longer connected.
Why Repair Matters
Diastasis recti is not just cosmetic — it weakens the abdominal wall, contributes to lower-back pain, urinary incontinence and umbilical hernia. Repair restores both function and aesthetics. Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico performs diastasis repair (myorrhaphy) routinely with abdominoplasty when the diastasis is present.
Surgical Technique
The two rectus muscles are reapproximated in the midline with permanent or long-acting sutures, in a continuous double-row pattern from xiphoid to pubis. The repair is reinforced with a second layer when needed. The result is a flat, defined waist and a functional abdominal core.
Long-term Function
Patients describe the post-op core as significantly stronger than before surgery, even compared with their pre-pregnancy state. Lower back pain often improves. The repair holds long-term provided the patient does not become pregnant again or gain significant weight.

FAQ about Abdominoplasty
in Mexico
How is an abdominoplasty performed?
A long low transverse incision is made from hip to hip. The skin and fat between this incision and the umbilicus are excised. The two halves of the rectus muscle (when separated) are sutured in the midline. Selective liposuction refines the flanks and upper abdomen. The umbilicus is repositioned through a new opening. Drains are placed before closure. Surgery lasts 3 to 5 hours under general anesthesia.
How much does abdominoplasty cost in Mexico City?
Argaman Plastic Surgeries Mexico's all-inclusive abdominoplasty package starts at $3,900 USD. The Mommy Makeover package (tummy + breast) is $7,500 USD. Total Body Lift is $9,800 USD.
Will I have a visible scar?
Yes — abdominoplasty leaves a hip-to-hip scar low enough to be hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom. The scar matures from red to pink to white over 12 to 18 months. It is advised to use silicone sheeting and follow a scar-care protocol to optimise final quality.
When can I exercise after abdominoplasty?
Light walking from day 1. Light cardio at 4 weeks. Full exercise including core work at 8 to 12 weeks. The compression garment is worn for 6 weeks total.
Will I have stretch marks after abdominoplasty?
Stretch marks below the umbilicus are removed with the excised skin (one of the bonuses of the operation). Stretch marks above the umbilicus remain but may appear less prominent due to skin tightening.
Can I get pregnant after abdominoplasty?
Yes — pregnancy is medically safe. However, it will stretch the abdomen again and may compromise your result, especially the diastasis repair. We recommend completing your family before abdominoplasty whenever possible.
How long does the result last?
The result is essentially permanent provided you maintain a stable weight (within 5 to 10 kg). Significant weight gain or pregnancy will affect the result. Skin elasticity continues to age normally.
Is abdominoplasty painful?
Moderate discomfort for the first 3 to 5 days, well controlled with prescribed medication. The dominant sensation is tightness from the muscle repair and pulled skin. Pain decreases significantly after week 1.
